Images that closely resembled the original miraculous image of Our Lady of Guadalupe were historically believed to carry a special devotional significance and were therefore especially treasured. In this painting, the Virgin is encircled by radiant rays of light and framed by flowers. The four small corner scenes depict episodes from her apparition to Juan Diego on the hill of Tepeyac, north of Mexico City.
Early paintings such as this one, which closely follow the original image, have long been highly valued by both collectors and the faithful. . The may be viewed in the collection of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and may be viewed at LACMA.
