Sampaguita — Philippine National Flower Sumi-e Gallery Wrap

by LSE_Prints
The flower every Filipino knows
by heart before they know
it by name.
A gnarled mature sampaguita
shrub anchors the left side
in the boldest darkest ink —
woody stems, old bark texture,
a plant tended for many
years in a Filipino garden.
From the shrub the flowering
stems cascade across the
full canvas in a natural
flowing arrangement —
star-shaped five-petal blooms
in tight clusters at every
tip, round unopened buds
at the youngest stem ends.
Through the blooming stems
in the middle distance the
barest atmospheric suggestion
of a traditional Filipino
home altar — a Santo Niño
in the softest possible
gray silhouette, the flicker
of candlelight as a warm
area of pale wash. So
soft it could be mist.
So precise it could only
be memory.
The signature element:
a traditional sampaguita
garland winding through
the lower composition —
individual blooms threaded
on a fine stem string
in the classic Filipino
style, trailing naturally
into the right side of
the canvas as if just
set down or still being
woven. This single detail
carries more Filipino
cultural memory per
brushstroke than any
other element in
the entire collection.
On the right side individual
petals drift in the open
cream space. The garland
trails among fallen petals
at the lower right.
Monochromatic black ink
and graduated gray wash
on aged cream washi paper.
Small red artist seal
in the lower right corner —
the only color.
No borders. No text.
No panel lines. One
seamless painting.
