Waling-Waling — Philippine Queen Orchid Sumi-e Wood Wall Art

by LSE_Prints
The Queen of Philippine Orchids.
Endemic to Mindanao. One of the
most spectacular flowers on earth.
An ancient gnarled tropical
hardwood trunk anchors the
left side in the boldest
darkest ink — moss and
epiphytic plants on its bark
surface establishing the humid
Mindanao highland forest setting.
Waling-waling orchid plants
grow from the trunk and branches,
their thick strap-like leaves
in bold confident brushwork,
their magnificent blooms
arching across the full
canvas in a natural arc.
At the heart of the composition
one enormous hero bloom —
broad rounded petals with
characteristic vein pattern
in fine dark ink, intricate
central lip in precise detail,
the bloom rendered with
maximum botanical precision.
The most distinctive element
of this painting: long
silver-gray aerial roots
cascading freely downward
from the plants in fine
pale ink lines — a curtain
of delicate marks that
veils the Mindanao highland
forest mist dissolving
behind them. No other
orchid painting in fine
art has this element.
It is uniquely and
entirely Philippine.
On the right side petals
and drifting aerial roots
scatter into the open
cream space.
Monochromatic black ink
and graduated gray wash
on aged cream washi paper.
Small red artist seal
in the lower right corner —
the only color.
No borders. No text.
No panel lines. One
seamless painting.
